Grades & GPA tools

Grade and GPA calculators work out where you stand in a class: weighted grades, semester averages, cumulative GPA, and the score you need on a final to hit a target. They are for students tracking progress mid-term and teachers converting percentages to letters quickly. Enter your actual weights and scores and the arithmetic your syllabus describes is done for you. 10 free tools in this category.

How to work out the grade you need on the final

This is the single most-asked question of any term, and it is straightforward once you know the final's weight. The Final Grade Calculator takes your current grade, the weight of the exam and your target, and returns the score required. If it returns something above 100, the target is out of reach and it is better to know in week ten than week fifteen.

To get your current standing accurately first, use the Grade Calculator with your real category weights rather than averaging raw scores. The Semester Grade Calculator combines term grades and the exam into the final mark.

What GPA calculators do and where they differ

They convert letter grades into grade points, weight each by credit hours and average the result. The GPA Calculator handles a single term, while the Cumulative GPA Calculator folds new terms into your existing record — which is why a strong semester moves a cumulative GPA less than students expect.

The wrinkle is scale. Most US institutions use an unweighted 4.0 scale, but many high schools add extra points for honours and AP courses, producing figures above 4.0. Check which scale your school reports before comparing. To convert a percentage into a letter, the Letter Grade Calculator applies the standard bands.

When to use quick grading tools instead

For marking a stack of papers, you want a score out of a total, not a weighted model. The Test Grade Calculator (EZ Grader) converts questions correct into a percentage instantly, and the Grade Percentage Calculator does the same from points earned versus points possible.

For a set of assignments where everything counts equally, the Grade Average Calculator is enough. If an assessment came out harder than intended, the Grade Curve Calculator applies a consistent adjustment across the class rather than an ad hoc bump, which is easier to defend if a student asks.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each category score by its weight as a decimal, then add the results. If homework is 30% at 90 and exams 70% at 80, the grade is 0.3 × 90 + 0.7 × 80 = 83.
What grade do I need on the final to pass?
It depends on your current grade and how much the final is worth. Rearrange the weighted formula: required score equals (target − current × non-final weight) ÷ final weight.
What is a good GPA?
On an unweighted 4.0 scale, 3.5 and above is generally considered strong, 3.0 solid, and below 2.0 usually triggers academic probation. Competitive graduate programmes often look for 3.5+.
How is cumulative GPA different from semester GPA?
Semester GPA covers one term's courses; cumulative GPA averages every credit you have taken across all terms. Because it is weighted by total credits, later semesters move it less and less.
How does grading on a curve work?
A curve shifts the class distribution, most simply by adding a fixed number of points so the top score becomes 100, or by fitting grades to a target distribution. It adjusts for an assessment being harder than intended, not for individual performance.
