What the tool does
Carriage returns and newlines (\r\n, \r and \n) are all replaced with a single space, then runs of spaces and tabs are collapsed to one and the ends are trimmed. “line one” + newline + “line two” becomes line one line two. No words are altered, so the wording and punctuation stay exactly as you pasted them.
The whole clean-up runs in your browser, so the text you paste is never uploaded, transmitted or stored on a server — fine for confidential PDFs and email threads.
Groups often move straight on to the case converter tool afterwards.
Why pasted text breaks badly
PDFs, plain-text emails and terminal output store a hard line break at the end of every visual line — typically at 72 or 80 characters. Pasting that into Word or a CMS keeps those breaks, producing ragged paragraphs. Stripping them lets your editor re-wrap the text to the real column width. Afterwards, verify the length with the character counter.
Worked example: a 500-word extract copied from a PDF can arrive with 60 hard breaks; joining it turns those 60 lines into one paragraph that re-flows correctly at any column width, and stray double spaces left by the breaks are collapsed automatically.
Related clean-up steps
Line-break removal pairs well with de-duplication: if the same line was pasted twice, run the duplicate line remover first, then join the survivors here. For lists you want to keep as lines, remove duplicates only and skip this step.
Frequently asked questions
- What does “line one / line two” become?
- line one line two — the break is replaced by a single space on one continuous line.
- Are blank lines removed too?
- Yes. Blank lines become spaces and are then collapsed, so no double spacing is left behind.
- Will it change my words or punctuation?
- No. Only whitespace is touched; letters, numbers and punctuation are untouched.
- Why does pasted PDF text have so many breaks?
- PDFs store a hard break at the end of each rendered line, usually every 70–80 characters.
- Can I keep paragraph breaks and remove only the line breaks inside paragraphs?
- No, every line break is replaced with a space, so the result is always a single paragraph. If you need to preserve paragraph structure, run one paragraph at a time and reassemble them in your editor.
