What lorem ipsum actually is
The text is a scrambled extract from Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum (45 BC). A 15th-century typesetter jumbled it to make a type specimen, and it survives because it has the letter distribution and word lengths of real Latin prose without carrying meaning that would distract a client reviewing a layout.
The character counter covers the same ground with a different mechanism.
How to use the generator
Choose how many paragraphs you need (1–10) and press Generate. Each run produces a fresh random mix, but the very first sentence always opens with the canonical “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…”. Paste the result into your wireframe, then check the length with the word counter.
Each paragraph runs to roughly 40 words, so three paragraphs is about 120 words — close to a short product description, and five is close to a standard blog intro. Generation happens entirely in your browser: nothing is requested from or stored on a server.
When not to use placeholder text
Never ship lorem ipsum to production — search engines index it and clients notice. It also hides real copy problems: a headline that fits in Latin may overflow in German. For repeated filler strings in tests or CSS demos, the text repeater is usually a better fit.
A practical compromise is to draft with lorem ipsum only for spacing decisions, then swap in real headlines as early as possible. Long German or Finnish words routinely add 30% to a line, which Latin filler will never reveal.
Frequently asked questions
- How does lorem ipsum always start?
- With “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit”, the canonical opening of the passage.
- How many words is one paragraph?
- Roughly 40 words here — three to five sentences of six to fourteen words each.
- Is lorem ipsum real Latin?
- It comes from real Latin by Cicero, but the words are scrambled, so it has no meaningful translation.
- Can I get different text each time?
- Yes. Press Generate again and a new random combination is produced.
- What if I need more than 10 paragraphs?
- Generate twice and paste the two batches together — each run produces a fresh random mix, so the text will not look duplicated. The 10-paragraph cap exists only to keep the output readable on screen.
