How running pace is calculated
Pace is the time it takes to cover one mile: pace = total time ÷ distance. Run 5 miles in 50 minutes and your pace is 50 ÷ 5 = 10 minutes per mile, shown as 10:00. The decimal part of a minute is converted to seconds (0.5 min = 30 sec).
Converting the decimal part is where mistakes creep in: a pace of 8.75 minutes per mile is 8 minutes 45 seconds, not 8:75. Multiply the decimal by 60 — 0.75 × 60 = 45. In the same way 7.2 min/mile is 7:12 and 9.4 min/mile is 9:24.

How to use this calculator
Enter your total time in minutes and your distance in miles. The result is your average pace per mile. To see the same effort as a speed instead, try the running speed calculator.
Enter the time in minutes only, so a 1 hour 45 minute run is 105, not 1.45. That is the single most common input error: 13.1 miles in 105 minutes is an 8:01 pace, while typing 1.45 produces a meaningless number.
Why pace matters
Pace is the language runners use for training and racing. Knowing your pace lets you target a finish time, hold back early in a race, and compare workouts. To project a full race from your pace, use the marathon time calculator.
Common race targets in pace terms: a 4 hour marathon is 9:10 per mile, a 2 hour half marathon is also 9:10, a 25 minute 5K is 8:03, and a sub-20 minute 5K needs 6:26 per mile.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate running pace?
- Divide total time by distance. 50 minutes over 5 miles is 50 ÷ 5 = 10:00 per mile.
- What is a good running pace?
- It varies by fitness and goal. Many recreational runners cruise at 9–11 minutes per mile, while faster runners hold sub-7:00.
- Is pace the same as speed?
- They describe the same effort inversely. Pace is time per mile; speed is miles per hour. A 10:00 pace equals 6 mph.
- Does this work for kilometers?
- The math is identical — enter time in minutes and distance in your unit, and the pace is per that unit.
- How do I convert a per-mile pace to per kilometer?
- Divide the per-mile pace by 1.60934: a 10:00 mile works out at 6:13 per kilometer. Going the other way, multiply the per-km pace by 1.60934, so 5:00 per km is 8:03 per mile.
