In summary: Calories = MET × weight in kg × hours. Running at MET 9.8 for 0.5 hour at 70 kg burns about 343 calories.

How calories burned running is calculated

The standard MET formula is calories = MET × weight in kg × time in hours. A MET (metabolic equivalent) rates an activity's intensity. Running at MET 9.8 for half an hour at 70 kg burns 9.8 × 70 × 0.5 = 343 calories.

Two units matter here. Weight must be in kilograms, so a pounds figure is divided by 2.205 first (154 lb = 70 kg), and time must be in hours — 45 minutes is 0.75, not 45. Typing minutes into the hours box is the most common reason a result comes out absurdly high.

The same numbers feed straight into the calories burned walking calculator.

How to use this calculator

Enter the MET value for your running intensity, your weight in kilograms, and the time in hours. Faster running uses a higher MET. To estimate a different activity, try the calories burned swimming calculator.

Worked example: a 60 kg runner doing 40 minutes at MET 11.0 burns 11.0 × 60 × 0.667 = about 440 calories.

Once that is settled, the calories burned biking calculator takes care of the next part.

Choosing a MET value

MET values for running rise with speed: roughly 8.3 at a 12-minute mile, 9.8 around a 10-minute mile, and 11.8 or higher at faster paces. Pick the value closest to your effort for a better estimate. Find your pace with the running pace calculator.

As a rough reference, most runners burn somewhere between 60 and 100 calories per kilometre, and that figure scales with body weight far more than with speed. Running the same distance faster mainly shortens the time rather than changing the total by much.

Frequently asked questions

How are calories burned running calculated?
Multiply MET by weight in kilograms by hours. MET 9.8 × 70 kg × 0.5 h = 343 calories.
What is a MET value?
A MET (metabolic equivalent) measures activity intensity relative to rest. Running typically ranges from about 8 to 12 METs.
Is this estimate exact?
It is an approximation. Actual burn varies with terrain, fitness, and individual metabolism, but the MET method is a widely used standard.
How do I find my weight in kg?
Divide pounds by 2.205. A 154 lb runner weighs about 70 kg.
Should I subtract my resting calories from the result?
The MET formula gives gross calories, which include the roughly 1 MET you would burn sitting still. For the net cost of the run alone, subtract 1 MET: at 70 kg for half an hour that is about 35 calories.
