How to convert steps to miles
Miles = steps × stride length (inches) ÷ 63,360 (there are 63,360 inches in a mile). A typical walking stride is about 26 inches, so 10,000 steps ≈ 4.1 miles. Taller people and faster paces have longer strides.
More worked examples with the same 26-inch stride: 2,000 steps is 0.82 miles, 5,000 steps is 2.05 miles and 10,000 steps is about 4.1 miles, or 6.6 kilometres. Turn the formula round and a mile takes 63,360 ÷ 26 = about 2,437 steps; with a longer 30-inch stride it is 2,112.
The 63,360 comes from 5,280 feet in a mile × 12 inches per foot, so the whole conversion is really just a change of units — no assumptions about speed or terrain are involved.
Once that is settled, the calories burned walking calculator takes care of the next part.
How to use this calculator
Enter your steps and your stride length in inches. To estimate stride, multiply your height in inches by about 0.42 (walking). The result shows miles and kilometres. To turn distance into calories, see the steps to calories calculator.
To measure your stride properly, walk 10 normal steps on a flat surface, measure from the start of the first step to the end of the tenth in inches, and divide by 10. The height shortcut is a fallback: someone 5 ft 10 in (70 inches) gets 70 × 0.42 ≈ 29 inches, which works out at about 2,155 steps per mile.
Stride is not fixed. Running lengthens it by roughly a third, uphill walking shortens it, and a treadmill stride is usually slightly shorter than an outdoor one. If you want a single number for a daily total, use your relaxed walking stride, since most steps in a day are ordinary walking rather than exercise.

Frequently asked questions
- How many miles is 10,000 steps?
- About 4.1 miles with a 26-inch stride — roughly 4 to 5 miles for most people.
- How do I find my stride length?
- Multiply your height in inches by about 0.42 for walking, or measure the distance of 10 steps and divide by 10.
- How many steps are in a mile?
- Around 2,000 to 2,500 for most people walking, depending on stride length.
- Does stride length change with speed?
- Yes. Running and faster walking lengthen your stride, so the same step count covers more distance.
- Why does my fitness tracker show a different distance?
- Most trackers use a stride estimated from your height and cadence, and some switch to GPS outdoors, so their figure moves with your pace while this one uses the single stride you enter. Measure your real stride over 10 steps and the two should agree to within a few percent.
