How random letters are picked
The tool holds the 26 capital letters A to Z and picks one position at random for each letter you ask for. Every letter has the same 1-in-26 chance, so rare letters such as Q, X and Z show up exactly as often as E or S — unlike normal English text, where letter frequencies are very uneven.
Once you are done here, the random list picker picks up where this leaves off.
How to use it
Set How many letters and press Generate. One letter is ideal for categories games, Scattergories or picking a starting letter for a name. Several letters work as random initials, seat labels or writing prompts. Repeats are allowed. For numeric draws use the random number generator.
In a classroom, one letter per round works well for alphabet games: draw a letter, then give everyone thirty seconds to name an animal, a country and a food starting with it. For a spelling warm-up, draw five letters and ask for a word using as many of them as possible. Because rare letters come up as often as common ones, expect the occasional awkward Q or X — that is part of the challenge.
Groups often move straight on to the random password generator afterwards.
Randomness and security
Every result on this page is produced in your own browser with JavaScript's built-in Math.random() pseudo-random generator. That is perfectly fine for games, giveaways, classroom picks and decision-making, but it is not cryptographically secure — never use it to generate keys, tokens or anything protecting real money or private data. Nothing you type is uploaded; the page never sends your inputs anywhere.
For a closely related job, the spinning wheel picker does it in one click.
Frequently asked questions
- Are letters always uppercase?
- Yes, results are shown as capitals A–Z. You can lowercase them yourself if your game needs it.
- Can the same letter appear twice?
- Yes. Each draw is independent, so duplicates are expected when you ask for several letters.
- Are vowels more likely?
- No. All 26 letters are equally likely, so a run of consonants is perfectly normal.
- How many letters can I generate?
- Up to 200 at once, listed together underneath the main result.
- Can I limit the draw to vowels or consonants?
- No. The draw always covers the full A–Z alphabet, so filter the results yourself if you only want vowels or consonants. There is no option to exclude particular letters.
