How the time countdown works
This counts from right now to the target time. If that time is still ahead today, it shows the hours and minutes left; if it has already passed, it counts to the same time tomorrow. Useful for shifts, appointments and reminders.
Worked example: if it is 14:20 now and you set the target to 19:00, the result is 4 hours 40 minutes. Set the target to 09:00 instead and, because 09:00 has already gone, the countdown rolls over to 09:00 tomorrow and shows 18 hours 40 minutes.
People working on this usually reach for the time duration calculator too.
How to use this calculator
Pick a target time (24-hour or your device's format) and read the hours and minutes remaining. For a full-day countdown to a date, use the days until date calculator.
Typical uses are shift ends, fasting windows, medication doses, parking expiry and airline check-in openings. Because the calculation always looks forward, the answer is never negative, and the largest value it can return is just under 24 hours.
One caveat: on the two days a year when the clocks change, the real elapsed time between two clock readings is an hour shorter or longer than it looks. For the rest of the year the hours and minutes shown are exact.
The countdown is measured from the moment the page loads or the target changes, so re-pick the time or reload the page for a fresh figure after a long gap.
Pair this with the days from today calculator when you need the fuller picture.
Frequently asked questions
- How many hours until a certain time?
- Subtract the current time from the target time. If it's already passed today, the calculator counts to that time tomorrow.
- Does it use a 24-hour clock?
- You enter the time in your device's picker; the calculation works the same in 12- or 24-hour format.
- What if the time already passed today?
- It rolls over and counts to the same time tomorrow.
- Does it update live?
- It's measured from the moment the page loads or the value changes.
- Does it handle other time zones?
- It reads your device's local clock for both the current time and the target, so both sides are in the same zone. To count down to something in another time zone, convert that time to your own clock first and enter the converted value.
