How words per minute works
Words per minute (WPM) is a measure of speed for reading, typing or speaking. The formula is WPM = words ÷ minutes. If you read 500 words in 2 minutes, your speed is 500 ÷ 2 = 250 WPM. Average adult reading runs around 200–250 WPM; comfortable typing is roughly 40 WPM.

Time at least a minute of continuous work for a fair reading. Short bursts flatter you, because a 15-second sprint doubled up to a minute ignores the fatigue and pauses that show up over longer stretches. Worked example
You type a 360-word email in 1.5 minutes: 360 ÷ 1.5 = 240 WPM (very fast for typing, normal for speaking). For presentations, speakers average 130–150 WPM, so a 10-minute talk is roughly 1,400 words. Plug a word count into the reading time calculator to plan timing.
Speed only counts alongside accuracy. A 90 WPM typing test with 12 errors is slower in practice than 70 WPM clean, once corrections are counted, and skimming at 600 WPM usually means comprehension has dropped below half.
