What time and a half means
Time and a half is 1.5 times your normal hourly rate, paid for overtime hours: Overtime rate = hourly rate × 1.5. At $20 an hour, time and a half is 20 × 1.5 = $30 per hour, so 10 overtime hours pay $300. It's the standard overtime premium for non-exempt workers in the U.S.

When time and a half applies
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees generally earn time and a half for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. Some states require it for long daily shifts too, and a few mandate double time in certain cases. Salaried-exempt roles often don't qualify — check your state rules and contract.
Adding it to your regular pay

Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate time and a half?
- Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5. At $20 an hour, time and a half is $30 per hour. Multiply by overtime hours for the total.
- What is time and a half for $20 an hour?
- $30 per hour. Ten overtime hours at that rate pay $300.
- When do I get time and a half?
- Federal law generally requires it for non-exempt employees working over 40 hours in a workweek. Some states add daily overtime rules.
- Is time and a half the same as double time?
- No. Time and a half is 1.5× your rate; double time is 2×. Double time is rarer and usually tied to holidays or very long shifts under state law or contract.
- Does time and a half get taxed more?
- It's taxed like regular income, but a bigger check can raise withholding for that period. Your annual tax depends on total income.
