In summary: Probability is favorable outcomes ÷ total outcomes. Rolling a specific number on a die is 1 ÷ 6 ≈ 0.167, or 16.7%.

How to calculate probability

Probability is the chance an event happens: favorable outcomes ÷ total possible outcomes. It ranges from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain). Rolling a specific number on a six-sided die is 1 ÷ 6 ≈ 0.167, or 16.7%.

The formula rests on one assumption: every outcome has to be equally likely. That holds for a fair die or a shuffled deck, but not for situations like weather or sport, where the possible results are not interchangeable and probabilities must be estimated from data instead. Counting the possible arrangements behind an event usually starts with the factorial calculator.

How to use this calculator

Enter the number of favorable outcomes and the total outcomes, assuming each is equally likely. The result shows the probability as a percentage, decimal and odds.

Counting the total correctly is the part people get wrong: it means every possible result, including the favorable ones — a die has 6 outcomes, not 5 non-winning ones. A probability of 1 ÷ 6 corresponds to odds of 1 to 5 against. Weighting each outcome by its payoff turns a probability into an expected value.

Reading the result

A probability near 0 means the event is unlikely, near 1 means it is nearly certain, and 0.5 means it is a coin flip. Multiplying the probability by the number of trials gives the number of hits you would expect on average — 60 rolls of a die should produce roughly 60 × 0.167 = 10 sixes.

That average is a long-run figure, not a guarantee. Short runs scatter widely around it, and past results do not change the next one: after five sixes in a row, the chance of another is still 1 ÷ 6. In hypothesis testing the probability you care about is the tail area reported by the p-value calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate probability?
Divide the number of favorable outcomes by the total number of equally likely outcomes. 1 of 6 is about 16.7%.
What is the probability of rolling a 6?
1 in 6, about 16.7%, on a fair six-sided die.
Can probability be greater than 1?
No. A single probability is always between 0 and 1 (0% to 100%).
How do I combine probabilities of independent events?
Multiply them. Two independent 1-in-6 rolls both hitting is 1/6 × 1/6 = 1/36.
How do I find the probability that an event does not happen?
Subtract the probability from 1. If rolling a specific number is 1 ÷ 6 ≈ 0.167, then not rolling it is 1 − 0.167 = 0.833, or about 83.3%. This complement rule is often the quickest route to an 'at least one' answer.
