The pounds to tons conversion factor

How to convert pounds to tons

Worked example: a skip loaded with 7,400 lb of rubble is 7,400 divided by 2,000 = 3.7 short tons. Converted instead to metric tonnes it would be 7,400 divided by 2,204.62 = 3.36 t - the same load, a smaller number, and a different disposal charge if the wrong unit reaches the invoice.
Weight limits are the other common use. A US bridge or truck rating quoted in tons almost always means short tons, so a 20-ton limit is 40,000 lb.
