How to convert pounds to cups
A pound is 453.6 grams and a US cup is 236.6 mL, so cups = pounds × 453.6 ÷ (density × 236.6). One pound of water (density 1) is about 1.92 cups; a pound of flour is closer to 3.6 cups because flour is lighter.
The two constants carry the units: 453.6 grams in a pound and 236.6 millilitres in a US cup. Dividing by the density converts weight back into volume, which is why the answer changes with the ingredient — a pound is always a pound, but a light powder fills far more of the jug than a syrup does.
Worked example with honey (density 1.42): 1 × 453.6 ÷ (1.42 × 236.6) = 453.6 ÷ 336 = 1.35 cups. Butter at 0.96 gives almost exactly 2 cups per pound, which is why a US pound of butter comes as four half-cup sticks.

Two cautions. Densities describe an ingredient sitting loosely in the cup, so a scooped, compacted cup of flour will not match — spoon it in and level the top. And a US cup is 236.6 mL, while a metric cup is 250 mL and an imperial cup 284 mL, so a recipe from outside the US needs fewer cups for the same pound.
