In summary: A percent-off discount multiplies the price by what remains: price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). At 25% off $80 you save $20 and pay $60.

What you actually pay

A percent-off discount reduces the price by a share of the original: Sale price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). On an $80 item at 25% off, you save 80 × 0.25 = $20 and pay $60. The amount saved is simply original price minus sale price. If the sign quotes a straight percentage off, the percent off calculator is the quicker route.

How to use this calculator

Enter the original price and the discount percentage shown on the tag or ad. The result shows your final price and the dollar amount you save. Change either number to compare deals instantly while you shop. Tax is applied to the discounted price, so finish up in the sales tax calculator.

Quick percent-off reference

For an $80 item, common discounts work out to:

DiscountYou saveYou pay
10%$8.00$72.00
20%$16.00$64.00
25%$20.00$60.00
50%$40.00$40.00
70%$56.00$24.00

Stacked discounts are not additive

An extra 20% off an already 30%-off price is not 50% off. Discounts apply one after another: 30% off $100 is $70, then 20% off $70 is $56 — an effective 44% off, not 50%. Apply each discount to the running price, not the original.

Adding sales tax

Sales tax is usually added after the discount, on the reduced price. So a $60 sale price with 8% tax costs $64.80. If you sell rather than buy, check the margin calculator to see how much profit a discount gives away, and the markup calculator to set prices with discounts built in.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage to find the savings, then subtract it from the price. For $80 at 25% off: 80 × 0.25 = $20 saved, so you pay $60.
How do I work out the final price quickly?
Multiply the price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). For 25% off, multiply by 0.75; $80 × 0.75 = $60.
Can I stack two discounts by adding them?
No. Discounts apply in sequence. 30% then 20% off is 44% off in total, not 50%, because the second discount is taken on the already-reduced price.
Is sales tax applied before or after the discount?
Almost always after. Tax is calculated on the discounted price, so a $60 sale price with 8% tax comes to $64.80.
What is 25% off $80?
$20 off, leaving a final price of $60.
